  Statement of Need/Program Overview
  Despite an evident disease burden and a relatively noteworthy incidence of specific manifestations such as VWD, many primary care physicians, specialists in areas outside of hematology, and allied health care providers lack knowledge and competence in terms of managing bleeding disorders among females.  The implications of these practice gaps and educational needs are particularly noteworthy in the specialties of obstetrics/gynecology (menstruation, perinatal care), dentistry (routine procedures, extractions, etc.), and otolaryngology (epistaxis). In addition, VWD in male patients may be overlooked and underdiagnosed in light of marginal symptomology relative to hemophilia A and B. Exacerbating a paucity of awareness and relative marginalization of patients with VWD, the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) guidelines for the disease have not been updated in more than a decade.  Taking this current clinical environment into consideration, further education is necessary to raise awareness, encourage collaboration with HTCs, and influence clinical practice, with the desired aim of reducing reproductive morbidity in females and improving outcomes across all patient populations.

  EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES
  At the conclusion of these activities, participants should be able to demonstrate improved ability to:
  
  Module 1 (EXPIRED):

  • Describe the etiology and epidemiology of von Willebrand disease (vWD) in males
  • Review the signs, symptoms, and diagnosis of vWD
  • Evaluate bleeding- and iron deficiency-related symptoms for diagnosing VWD in males en route to appropriate management

  Module 2:

  • Review common bleeding disorders occurring in reproductive aged females
  • Highlight the prevalence of heavy menstrual bleeding (HMB) among females with von Willebrand disease (VWD) and rare bleeding disorders (eg, Glanzmanns thrombasthenia, Factor XIII deficiency)
  • Using diagnostic symptoms and signs, identify women who may have a bleeding disorder
  • Review the management considerations for women with bleeding disorders

  Module 3:

  • Describe common gynecological abnormalities observed in menstruating women
  • Review management strategies for females with von Willebrand disease (VWD) and other bleeding disorders in the perinatal setting
  • Employ strategies to minimize the effects of postpartum hemorrhage (PPH)
