Statement of Need/Program Overview
Narcolepsy is a chronic, incurable, and potentially disabling neurologic disorder that is primarily characterized by excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS) and signs of rapid eye movement (REM) sleep dissociation, such as cataplexy. The clinical, psychosocial, and socioeconomic consequences of poor sleep quality and EDS can be severe, with variable and potentially devastating manifestations that range from cardiovascular events and psychiatric comorbidities to poor occupational performance and motor vehicle accidents. This activity will provide instruction on current treatment strategies, medical and pharmacy benefit management, and patient care strategies for managed care professionals to improve overall health and economic outcomes for patients with narcolepsy.

EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES
After completing this activity, the participant should be better able to:

• Track 1: The Clinical, Economic, and Humanistic Impact of Narcolepsy in a Managed Care Setting
  • Quantify the various components of narcolepsy-related disease burden in terms of morbidity, health care resource utilization, and HRQL
  • Characterize the potential impact of narcolepsy from clinical, psychosocial, and socioeconomic perspectives
  • Provide accurate and appropriate counsel as part of the managed care treatment team
  • Provide appropriate care and counsel for patients and their families
