Patient-Centered Communication: Core Skills for Motivation and Change
Target Audience
This activity has been designed to meet the educational needs of physicians, pharmacists, and members of the care team involved in chronic disease management of patients.
Statement of Need/Program Overview
Health professionals working in chronic disease management have increasingly identified lack of motivation and ambivalence as major barriers to patient self-care. Motivation plays a big role in whether patients can be successful in making behavioral changes that influence how they adhere to treatment recommendations. One such strategy that is particularly suited to addressing patient beliefs and motivation is Motivational Interviewing. This is a novel intervention modality recently introduced to disease management as a health coaching approach that addresses issues known to impede the patient’s self-management of chronic illness. Health coaching is an emerging field in which health professionals facilitate behavior modification in patients to improve their health.
