Dr. Albert Waldo is the Walter H Pritchard Professor of Cardiology,Professor of Medicine, and Professor of Biomedical Engineering at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine in Cleveland, Ohio. He is also Associate Chief of Cardiology for Academic Affairs at University Hospitals Case Medical Center in Cleveland. Dr. Waldo received his MD from the State University of New York College of Medicine in New York City, and completed his postdoctoral fellowships in cardiology and cardiac electrophysiology at Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center in New York City. He is a founding member and past president of the North American Society of Pacing and Electrophysiology (NASPE), now called the Heart Rhythm Society (HRS); and he has served as the president of the Cardiac Electrophysiology Society, and the Ohio Chapter of the American College of Cardiology (ACC). He is a fellow of the ACC, the American College of Chest Physicians, the American Heart Association, the American College of Physicians, and HRS. He is a member of the American Society for Clinical Investigation, the Association of American Physicians, the Association of University Cardiologists, and the American Physiological Society.
Dr. Waldo’s research in the field of cardiac electrophysiology is well known, and includes studies of the pathophysiology, mechanisms, and treatment of cardiac arrhythmias, as well as leadership roles in numerous clinical trials. He received the Distinguished Scientist Award from the NASPE (1997) and the ACC - Translational Domain (2009), He has also received The William Dock Master Teacher Award in Medicine from his alma mater, an Award for Achievements in Clinical and Experimental Cardiology from the Foundation Hartsvrienden RESCAR of The Netherlands, the Outstanding Achievement Award from the European Cardiac Arrhythmia Society, the first Founders Lectureship Award from HRS (2007), and the Michel Mirowski Award of Excellence in the Field of Clinical Cardiology and Electrophysiology (2007).
Dr. Waldo’s extensive public service has included committee membership in the NHLBI Cardiovascular A and B Study Sections and the American Medical Association’s Diagnostic and Therapeutic Technology Assessment Program. He has served on the ACC’s Electrophysiology/Electrocardiology/Pacemaker Committee, Annual Scientific Session Program Committee, National Nominating Committee, and Board of Governors. He currently serves as a consultant to the Circulatory System Devices Panel of the Medical Devices Advisory Committee of the FDA and to the Electrical Signaling, Ion Transport, and Arrhythmias (ESTA) Study Section of the NIH/NHLBI. Dr. Waldo has over 600 publications. He also serves or has served on the editorial boards of most peer-reviewed journals in the field, including Circulation, the Journal of the American College of Cardiology, the American Journal of Cardiology, Pacing and Clinical Electrophysiology, the Journal of Cardiovascular Electrophysiology, the Journal of Electrocardiology, Heart Rhythm, Clinical Cardiology, Heart Hospital, ACCEL Audio Journal, and NASPE Tapes, of which he was editor-in-chief.
