Target Audience
  • Medical Directors and Pharmacy Directors from health plans, HMOs, integrated health systems, employers, quality organizations, and other managed care organizations (MCOs)
  • Managed care-affiliated care team members involved with patient evaluation, education, and follow-up for allergen immunotherapy: physicians, pharmacists, nurses, and case managers
Program Overview
This educational initiative is designed to address managed care professionals' need to evaluate evolving allergy immunotherapy treatment protocols and benefit design methodologies to improve outcomes for health plan patients impacted by allergic diseases. The purpose of the activity is to increase the competence and performance of the audience by enhancing results of their own organizations' systematic reviews and analyses on the impact of emerging oral immunotherapy as compared to subcutaneous injection.

Educational Objectives
After completing this activity, the participant should be better able to:
  • Recommend allergen immunotherapy treatment strategies in accordance with current AAAAI guidelines
  • Review the underlying pathophysiology of allergic rhinitis and the immune response that is generated against specific allergens
  • Assess recent clinical data on the risks and benefits of allergen immunotherapy for patients with allergic symptoms of rhinitis or conjunctivitis
  • Evaluate the patient preferences regarding oral immunotherapy for allergies
  • Outline the direct and substantial indirect costs related to allergic disease as a leading cause of absenteeism and productivity loss in the workplace
  • Apply benefit design methodologies that MCOs can implement to improve the overall value for allergy immunotherapy
